I have seen the pink beaches of St. Kitts. Ok...so they aren't hot pink or vibrant pink...more of the very soft pastel pink...but I saw them. We walked along them as well as snorkeled off of them.
As promised I swore to stay away from land and stick to the sea and I was not disappointed with my choice for a single moment. We grabbed a taxi out of Basseterre and ended up at Friars Beach with had a pretty decent coral reef.
Although the water was warm and clear I was somewhat disappointed with the actual snorkeling and would consider it average at best. I have seen better but still it was a good day in the water. I was thrilled to see a school of squid. Yes squid! We also came across an octopus although on my first pass over it I did not see it. . Some of my snorkel mates spotted it hiding in the shadows and I had to be called back over to see it. The fish were vibrant colors of neon orange, green, yellow, purple, blue. Just fantastic colors. The visability was also exceptional. Maybe 100-150 feet.
After some snorkeling we washed up on the beach, rented beach chairs and an umbrella (for $5) and lounged for most of the day. I was delighted to find a quiet beach I could just hang out and relax away from crowds and tours and cruise ships. This was a great way to celebrate the last days of our cruise.
